Description

Since we designed our Haberdasher’s Kitchen range seven years ago, we have become really rather smitten with mid-century design. We have noticed over time that our designers and customers love to mix Haberdasher’s and other deVOL kitchen cupboards together, curating a less predictable and more personal style to their home. So, we decided to design a mid-century light to add to our lighting range, taking lots of inspiration from the interiors of the fifties, sixties and seventies. One light quickly turned into two, almost twins, but not identical, we introduce to you ‘The Bonnet’ and ‘The Bell’. The Bonnet is a wonderfully vibrant chartreuse glaze, a mix of warm and cool greens, a very retro look. The Sepia Bell is a little warmer and moodier, with unusual browns and earthy tones. Each and every one of these shades is a little bit unique in colour and tone but the essence is always the same.

They both have a memorable shape and ooze personality; they feel completely at home above a kitchen table or in a corner dangling over a leather armchair. The opaque clay ensures the light is cast directly under the shade creating a contained pool of atmosphere wherever the pendant is hung. Clearly defining areas in the home and giving them different moods was key to this new design movement. Many renowned mid-century architects also designed lighting, appreciating what an important part it plays in the home.

This pair of deVOL mid-century pendants have all the trademarks of the era, sculptural, curvy and minimalist, with a hint of boldness and fun. Muted greens and browns were favourites at the time as they work so well with woods and natural materials and blend in with so many colour schemes. We have added a natural cotton flex which is thick and putty coloured and looks just the part.

The Bonnet and Bell pendants are slip-cast with earthenware clay and glazed by hand in our ceramic studios here in Leicestershire.
