Frieda and Javvy Royle, the founders of the fabulously quirky interiors company ‘House of Hackney’, have upped sticks and moved to a Cornish castle. It’s a fantasy world, the stuff dreams are made of, a magical place that has to be seen to be believed. Exotic heated gardens full of banana trees, Indian pools, fruit orchards and Victorian greenhouses so beautifully wild and impeccably planted you feel you have been transported to a wonderland. They are opening up their new home as ‘Hotel Trematonia’, it promises to be a truly immersive experience infused with the magic of nature and creativity.
So with all this in mind, designing a deVOL kitchen for this castle was an exciting and truly unique experience for us all. A little daunting too, but it’s a first for deVOL, a kitchen fit for a castle so it really had to be something memorable.
Classic English furniture reaching up to the ceilings of this incredible room and topped off with castellations, of course! we love this fantasy touch. The most memorable piece is our new deVOL ‘Dairy Table’, a handsome, handmade prep table with deep drawers and a soft, smooth marble worktop. The inspiration for this new deVOL piece was taken from Lanhydrock House, a Victorian estate just a few miles down the road from Trematon. We love the connection and the authenticity of this piece, sitting regally amongst the French tapestry-inspired wallpaper by House of Hackney and the glamorous Italian cooker with bespoke copper hood.
The beautifully dark original parquet floor, handmade Zellige tiles with hand-drawn images of the castle and simple uncluttered styling make this room so atmospheric and exciting. As always with the best things in life, it has a little twist that takes it from ordinary to extraordinary. The stripey curtains and lampshades were a genius touch, a little bit of soft femininity in this grand, eclectic kitchen.
This is a place to dream of and we simply adore the part we played in this fantasy world in the Cornish countryside.
