Woven buildings

5th March 2013

By Ben Flannaghan

This in a research project by the ICD and ITKE at the University of Stuttgart. It is created by constructing a steel frame that maps out the high and low points in the building’s skin. Then a robot weaves pre-soaked carbon fibre strands between these points. Once the weave has set they can then dismantle the steel frame and the structure is left free standing.

The formed structure that they have created is an incredible and great example of how technology can push aesthetic styling. By being able to build structures on site, by robots, opens up some exciting possibilities that would otherwise be difficult to transport or assemble.
