“What are your cupboards made from?” is one of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to choosing a kitchen. deVOL cupboards are always made from the highest quality hardwoods such as maple and oak, by hand in our workshops in England, something not many kitchen companies can still say.
We always encourage our customers to ask exactly where their furniture is made and what it’s made from, so I thought I’d give you a more detailed breakdown of all the key materials we use for our different kitchen ranges and why…

The Real Shaker Kitchen
deVOL Shaker cupboards are modular pieces of furniture, designed to be strong and durable. To ensure we achieve this, each deVOL cupboard carcass is made from a very high-quality prime birch ply that is bonded with a chemical-free, waterproof glue.
Our team is committed to innovation in the workshop and is constantly honing and improving both the materials and techniques we use to create the most beautiful and long-lasting furniture possible. It was through this exploration we found that rock maple, with its high density, was particularly sympathetic to our production methods. This timber offers a higher level of stability and less movement during everyday use than other materials, so our team pick out the prime planks for our Shaker doors and frames.
Shaker drawer boxes are all constructed from solid oak with an oak-veneered base and feature traditional dovetail joints, while the painted front is made from rock maple.
For the more decorative elements, such as spice racks, panelling, skirting and cornicing, we use tulipwood.

The Classic English Kitchen
deVOL Classic English cupboards utilise many of the same materials as our Shaker range, with the doors, frames and drawer fronts using rock maple, and tulipwood used for decorative details such as cornice and skirting. The drawer boxes are made from solid oak, with an oak-veneered base.
The main difference between the two ranges can be found in the bespoke elements which make the Classic English furniture personal to each customer. As each design is made as one whole piece of furniture (unless there are access restrictions), rather than modular cupboards, this allows us to use laminated solid birch boards for the end panels, rather than the birch ply required for Shaker. This material is also used for the internal shelves.
Another bespoke element is the tongue and groove panelling we use on the interiors for all of our Classic English cupboards. To achieve this look, we use tulipwood, rather than birch ply for the back panels, but keep the cheeks made from birch ply to guarantee the stability of the cupboards.

The Sebastian Cox Kitchen
Unlike our Shaker and Classic English furniture, the deVOL Sebastian Cox range predominantly uses beech. Beech is a native species with good sustainability credentials, and it is incredibly beautiful. So, instead of paint, we use water-based stains to allow the natural grain of the beech to be seen and felt.
One place we don’t use beech is the interior carcass. This is made of the same waterproof birch ply that ensures all our furniture is strong and durable.
We also use ash for the drawer boxes and the characteristic woven back panels which are such a celebrated feature of this range.

The Haberdasher’s Kitchen
The deVOL Haberdasher’s collection was designed to evoke the nostalgic feeling of an old haberdashery shop, so the natural choice here was oak. The doors, skirting and tambour panels are all made from solid oak, and any painted tongue and groove panelling is made from tulipwood. The drawers of our Haberdasher’s cupboards are made from oak with an oak-veneered base.
As with our other cupboards, the carcasses are made from a high-quality birch ply which meets the strictest environmental standards.
