Rooms within rooms

The glazed partition in our New York showroom allowed us to create distinct areas in this long, narrow room.

We’re often asked about trends. We don’t like that word as it can lead to rash and expensive decisions that you end up changing a year or so down the line. Sometimes though, there are things we see in the interiors world that we particularly enjoy and thought you might be interested in too. The idea of adding wood and glass partitions to create rooms within rooms is something we’ve been fond of for a while, it seems to be having a bit of a resurgence in popularity now and it’s easy to see why.

We used wavy heritage glass in this partition which gives the room a beautiful mottled shadow when the sun shines.

Interior glazing is a joy, it opens up spaces, it closes up spaces, it creates nooks and corners and it gives you opportunities to bring in glorious new-found light.

Gone are the days when we yearned for huge open plan spaces. We like a little bit of separation. Not solid walls but glazed screens that allow light and views to be shared. Divisions that mean you can be together and do your own thing all at the same time.

A before and after of our Sebastian Cox Kitchen at Cotes Mill.

We have added atmospheric glazed partitions between the ancient beams and posts of our Cotes Mill showroom, they have given us the opportunity to create a whole new layout for our kitchens. Previously unused spaces have become cosy corners with vintage tables and wispy fabric hanging from café curtain rails.

This previously empty space has become one of our favourite spots in the whole mill.

deVOL café curtain rails and delicate muslin curtains have created the perfect bistro nook.

The new Twickenham project that you can see below showcases this idea perfectly, encasing our Shaker cupboards in a clever and very practical glazed room. The glass allows this utility to be full of light even though it doesn’t have any windows. It’s the best feeling, to find you have suddenly added purpose to what may have looked like an unusable space.

The Twickenham laundry room is so pretty with Scullery Yellow Shaker cupboards.
