New Books & Accessories

22nd October 2014

By Kitty Burrows

As a placement student at deVOL, one of my tasks at Cotes Mill is helping our Creative Director, Helen, source new gifts and accessories available for sale in the kitchen showrooms.

Our book table is steadily filling up with a wonderful range of home inspired interiors books, cookery books, and travel journals, as well as many more titles which sit perfectly on a coffee table or given as gifts.

Here’s a review of two of our favourites (in about 100 words).

Remodelista by Julie Carlson: Personality, not Perfection

Remodelista is a home interiors blog that deVOL are regularly featured on (not only the reason we love them over here ..) – and their first book has successfully turned their online home into hardback form.

Sustainability is a constant throughout this book – their manifesto of combining modern and classic pieces considers all budgets, as utilitarian items should never be dismissed in place of statement pieces to finish a room.

On top of the inspiring imagery from a selection of their favourite homes, the editors go a step further by dissecting the different elements of the room in ‘Steal This Look’ after each feature. Practical advice is in abundance, with a focus on the important details: new uses for familiar objects, simple storage solutions and professional advice for the just starting-out renovator.

‘The average kitchen remodel requires 2,500 decisions.’ And you couldn’t start anywhere better by picking up this book.

A Life Less Ordinary by Zoe Ellison and Alex Legendre: Friendship, Philosophy, Design

Authors of ‘A Life Less Ordinary’, Zoe and Alex, own their own lifestyle store Igigi in Brighton.

This thoughtful book takes the reader through the stories of both authors, how they met, and how their passions aligned to create a unique haven for the sentimental object in a modern space.

There is a muted, earthiness to every page in this book. Many pages are dedicated to one object, chosen because of it’s history and beautiful imperfections, as well as it’s ability to give character and uniqueness to any room.

However rusted, tarnished and worn their objects of choice might be, the composition and layout of each page is always on-mark, with their love of texture shining through from the first to the very last page.

The author’s passion is contagious, as they take you to the birthplace of their store and into their homes, and let you into the Igigi philosophy and way of life.
