Mixing old and new in this delightful Shaker kitchen
21st June 2019
I realised the other day that we shot this beautiful Pantry Blue kitchen back in February but never actually shared the photos with you on the journal! I’ve always loved homes that mix old and new, and this Shaker kitchen does it in the most beautiful way. Clean and simple and delightfully refreshing, the Marlow Kitchen combines modern and traditional styles with a few fantastic pieces of vintage furniture that elevate this design to something really special.
Shaker cupboards, painted in our iconic Pantry Blue, were the basis for this cool kitchen. Decorated with Bella Brass hardware and topped with hardwearing white Silestone worktops – it’s a classic combination and one that’s so easy to make your own.
This family chose a very fun and bold geometric cement flooring from Terrazzo Tiles and contrasted it beautifully with more traditional elements like this huge white Aga. The Shaker canopy above was made to hide the extractor, it’s over two metres wide but doesn’t feel imposing or out of place and makes the perfect spot for a little plant or picture – I love the tiny toy giraffe!
The incredible old pantry is my favourite part of this kitchen, all distressed and peeling and just so full of character… what a find! And it’s super practical too, there is so much room for crockery, food, glassware, linens, whatever you like really – all in one handy, easy to reach place that you can organise exactly as you like. No more dashing around trying to remember which cupboard you hid the mixing bowl or fancy glasses in, just pure kitchen bliss.
Nowadays kitchens have become so much more than practical rooms to cook and clean and do chores, they have become places where you can show your personality and style. No longer are people after wall-to-wall cupboards with bland colours and materials that you wouldn’t dream of using in the rest of your home, they want a place to hang out, where they can enjoy long lazy lunches or drinks with friends or even a place to take the time to slow down and find a little solitude with a hot cup of tea and a good book.
Looking into this kitchen you get a real sense of the fun and very cool family who live here. They made bold decisions and threw out the rule book and it really paid off. I know we say it all the time, but it really is so important to try and choose things you love rather than what you think is on trend. Fashions will come and go, but having a space that reflects yours and your family’s life will always be special to you.
I hope you enjoyed having a little look around this new Shaker kitchen. We’re always on the lookout for inspiring homes to photograph for our brochures, magazines and social media, so if you have a lovely deVOL Kitchen please do share some pictures with us. You can email me at collette@devolkitchens.co.uk or even better, show them off on Instagram and remember to tag @devolkitchens so we don’t miss them, we love sharing our favourites.
If you’d like to use this incredible kitchen as a backdrop for your own photography, now you can!! The wonderful owners decided to also rent the space out as a location house. Check out their Instagram @leschambresdeschambers.
