big night..in

Coming home from holiday is when you want to do something really ordinary like eat marmite on toast, have a long bath or watch tv. Paul watched a movie while I was away and said ‘you’re gonna love it’! New York, Italians, Kitchens, cooking, restaurants, he was right – I loved it. You know when you watch a movie and the images you see make you smile, it’s not about the story it’s just the feel, the mood, the whole idea is so right. Imagine ‘two young Italian brothers’ Primo and Secondo! totally passionate about authentic Italian food. They move to New York, buy a little place near the sea and try to educate people to appreciate real, simple Italian ingredients and flavours.
These images from the movie show the simplicity and beauty of this proper freestanding kitchen, carrara marble, piles of white plates a good big sink.
The kitchen in the movie is so authentic, the styling is absolutely delightful and a look close to my heart. Freestanding tables, carrara marble, copper pots and pans, open shelving. It’s everything we try to create ourselves and makes me love our Classic kitchen furniture all over again.
I love the old tables and industrial cooker and the space to move around the room with everything functional and close to hand.
The guys struggle to get the attention of the American public whos perception of Italian food is huge meatballs and spaghetti piled high and drowning in cheese. So the movie is their struggle to win over the taste buds and hearts of their neighborhood. Watching them chop up tomatoes, make omelettes, tear basil and chop onions is a wonderful sight. And the way the restaurant is decorated is so delightfully simple, it completely reminded me of one of my favourite places, Polpetto in Soho, it just must have been an inspiration for the restaurants. Little cotton lace half curtains up at the window, dark wood, bent back chairs and crisp white linen.
above polpetto in Soho, so atmospheric and like the movie Big NightThe acting and the cast are excellent, Minnie Driver, who is always a pleasure to watch and the very cool Isabella Rosselini (remember Blue Velvet?), not sure I knew the other actors but the casting was so spot on, you must see the film, made way back in 1996 its called Big Night.
