A Victorian Country Home in the Surrey Hills
23rd March 2022
We posted this glorious kitchen over on Instagram the other week and wow, did you all love it! So I thought you might like to explore the rest of this Victorian country house…
Classic English cupboards with mixed material worktops and a good smattering of aged brass.
Home to a family of 6, or 12 if we’re counting the dogs and cats!!, this place is huge but its interior is all about coming together and hanging out. The interior designer Maddalena Minerva was keen to add home comforts; vintage rugs, squishy leather chairs, and rich woods. The warmth of the beams was brought down into the kitchen with rustic oak tops, deVOL Bum Stools and Chairs and a stylish Peg Leg Table made from solid oak. This deVOL design features an unusual ‘split’ leg joint which is incredibly strong and means the table can be assembled without the need for glue.
The deVOL Bum Stool is such a unique design, just look at that curved seat, made for bums by bums.
Our Peg Leg Table, Bum Chairs and bench seat bathed in glorious sunshine.
A deliciously deep green was chosen for the cupboards, this hue pairs so well with aged brass hardware and has a way of making furniture feel instantly classic. I love the decision to also opt for dark floors, big limestone tiles from our sister company, Floors of Stone. Their slightly worn appearance makes it look like they’ve been here for years and years.
Tumbled Antiqued Ash Limestone Tiles were a great choice for this country kitchen.
An awkward nook provided the perfect spot for a little walk-in pantry, which meant the rest of the kitchen could be kept quite simple with no need for bulky storage. Instead, extra space was cleverly concealed in the lift-up bench seat and impressive island that measured almost 3 and a half metres end to end. Keeping one side open was an important choice here, not only creating a spot to pull up a stool but also preventing such a substantial piece from looking really bulky.
A walk-in pantry is the dream scenario, all of your food in one beautifully organised spot. The whole room was an impressive 428 square ft. Imagine having all that space!
I quite like this idea of keeping the cabinetry simple and using something a little more daring on your walls. Our creamy ‘Linen’ is perfect with this bright pop of sunshine yellow. So happy and uplifting, it’s bound to cheer up even the most monotonous chores. These hard-working rooms really need to be practical but you want them to be beautiful too. How much nicer would it be doing all your laundry in here.
The deVOL Laundry Maid – nothing beats drying your clothes in the fresh air, not to mention the environmental benefits. These upright cupboards aren’t just for kitchens, they can be a great way of getting organised in any room of your home.
Good old fashioned quarry tiles are always our first choice in these types of rooms, sturdy and functional and utterly charming. How lovely that they decided to use them in the boot room too and run them all the way up the stairs. The rich terracotta is particularly sumptuous paired with our Clerkenwell Blue cupboards and paneling. As you can imagine, a house of 6 means there is always an abundance of coats and hats and scarves and shoes so this needed to be a room that could take a good deal of use.
Traditional Mayan Taps give a more utilitarian look and are perfect for smaller sinks.Handmade Terracotta Tiles are so beautifully rustic, they feel very authentic in this grand country home.
A special thank you to the interior designer Maddalena Minerva for sharing these images with us, all beautifully captured by Astrid Templier.
