The Blackheath Kitchen

Total Cupboard Costs: £67,420

There's a very pretty neighbourhood nestled in Southeast London, it's called Blackheath and is known as one of the city's most desirable places to live. What a treat it was to visit a grand old Georgian home here, meet the stylish couple behind it, their two handsome pups, Duke and Amos, and find one of the most full-of-personality kitchens we've seen in a really long time.

Built in the 1800s, this big old place was amazing. The owners showed us photos of what it once looked like and told us how they'd spent the last three years working tirelessly to bring it back to its original glory. Most impressively, reinstating all of the intricate coving and tasking a local decorative artist to hand-paint and distress the walls to recreate that perfectly imperfect, plaster-like finish. Mottled yellows and greens and browns and creams, it was bold but it was the commitment to the look that really made it work.

Bakehouse Green was the colour choice here for the painted Classic English furniture and plenty of storage was the goal. No open shelves or glass, it was all behind doors and drawers but everything still to hand, just keeping the room clutter-free. The only opportunity to display was one simple aged brass rail above the range cooker, adorned with a classic collection of copper pots, the restraint was so good.

A deVOL Dairy Table took centre stage, topped with cool Carrara marble that extended out on one side, allowing room for a few leather bar stools to be pulled up so everyone can be in on the action. This unpainted piece from our Heirloom collection has become top of all of our wish lists for its supreme functionality and austere beauty, we're yet to see a room where it doesn't look just the part.

Now, we must talk about all the copper!! It was literally shining out from atop the furniture with the warmest of glows and a beautifully aged patina. No kitchen worktop can quite compare. Two full length runs, one with a seamlessly integrated copper sink and hammered draining board, one that continued up the wall behind the cooker to create a splashback. The choice to include this special material in a big way was clever, adding to the drama and moodiness but also giving a reflective feel to this shady room.
